  • DESCRIPTIONThis young family was looking for a true butterfly garden. They loved getting their children outside to observe and enjoy nature, but they needed some help in designing a part-sun (mostly shady) butterfly garden that would thrive in Florida. This large 30 ft by 15 ft space needed a path leading to a bench and a lot of plants to fill in the garden. Design-wise, we opted for a circular path through the garden leading to their bench, a place to sit and watch the birds feed and butterflies float by gathering nectar. We chose a plant palette indicative of a naturalistic look including wildflowers such as yellow cutleaf coneflower, stoke's aster, wild petunia, tropical salvia, ironweed. We planted a swath of river oats, a nod to the meadow look, and created a bird-friendly hedge along the back of the garden using marlberry, myrsine, and snowberry. We also added a functional groundcover layer of creeping sage and hammock twinflower to fill in and cover the soil when the mulch decomposes as well as add small flowers.
